I've been having this conversation with my fellow UNT fans for a few years. I don't like the reaction to other's good fortune. It reminds me of an survey of rich people a few years ago, when the financial crisis was just beginning. Basically the rich folks said they were kind of glad that other people were doing a little poorly and not able to buy Gucci and Prada anymore. They felt that there should be some distinction between the classes.
As terrible as that sounds, it is understandable. When you work hard (as did the rich people, at least in their own minds) you want to be rewarded a little. How much of a reward is it when the other guy gets the same thing? Geez!
So forgive Southern Miss fans and UNT fans, and all those other schools that just don't like the fact that a startup program is making their way into their "prestigious" conference.
The only schools with a rightful gripe are probably MTSU, and LaTech. If UTSA is lucky, that is no crime. If MTSU's president is terrible and AD Lynn Hickey is awesome?
Don't hate the player hate the game, and all that.
The best thing to come from all this is a real and true rival. The University of North Texas is so damn similar to UTSA that when the two fan bases begin pointing out flaws it looks like brothers telling yo mama jokes.
Whatevs.
I like it. There needs to be a certain level of otherness to a rival. Tx State is too close and too culturally similar to create some actual hate. Dallas is 200 miles away and full of douches (right?). UNT fans are likely Mavs fans and that is dumb. Dallas stole AT&T from San Antonio. Discuss.
It is South Texas vs North Texas and it is awesome. Can't wait for 2013.
Go Runners.
