Bennett Okotcha to UTSA

While UTSA failed (or chose not to pursue, depending who you ask) four-star defensive talent Donald Hopkins, the Roadrunners have managed to land a potential defensive star with familial ties to the program.

Bennett Okotcha, the brother of running back Evil Evans Okotcha, has left the Oklahoma Sooners football program, and will reportedly be joining his brother in San Antonio. Bennett was a highly recruited cornerback at Coppell High, gaining offers from many high-profile programs. Originally committed to Notre Dame, Okotcha flipped to Oklahoma near his signing day.

Bennett did in fact redshirt his freshman year at OU, so bearing any unforseen waivers, Okotcha will have to burn a year of eligibility this season. Surely a price he is willing to pay to reunite with his brother. His time off will also help him adjust to his new setting and learn the 4-2-5 Neathery Defense. At 6'0", 176 pounds, Okotcha is FBS ready at the cornerback position. Once he is eligible to begin playing, he will also reunite with a former Coppell defensive teammate in Nic Johnston.

Bennett Okotcha recruiting rankings (per soonersports.com)
No. 42 cornerback (Scout.com)
No. 50 cornerback (ESPN.com)
No. 64 cornerback (Rivals.com)
No. 98 player in Texas (Rivals.com)

Former Wyoming Cowboy Kody Sutton eyes UTSA transfer

A former Wyoming Cowboy running back has his eyes set on transferring to UTSA. Kody Sutton, a 5'8", 194 pound running back, saw decent playing time as a true freshman last year in Laramie. A game changing player, Sutton has been described as "a fire hydrant to tackle" and a "potential superstar". Sutton burst on to the FBS scene during a game against Air Force, where the true freshman ran for 56 yards on 11 carries. A burly and powerful back, Wyoming's coach described him as "one of the [best] steals in the country".

Sutton has been forced to transfer back home to Texas due to a family issue. Hailing from Texarkana, Sutton is friends with several of the East Texas players on the roster, particularly Kenny Harrison. Due to NCAA transfer rules, it is likely that Sutton would be forced to sit out this season unless he is awarded a hardship waiver. Fortunately for UTSA, Sutton would still have three years to play for the Roadrunners if he joins the team. It will be interesting to see if the UTSA coaching staff opts to take Sutton on the team, as they turned down four-star defensive tackle Donald Hopkins earlier in the week. While I have confirmed that Sutton does have extremely high interest in UTSA, remember that transfer situations are always a nightmare from a logistical, academic, and timing stand point, so reserve exuberance until the situation resolves itself over the next few days.

Check out Sutton's incredible highlight film from high school. Impressive balance, field vision, and speed. How Sutton managed to avoid BCS recruiters evades me, but Wyoming gave him a good opportunity for early playing time. Be sure to head over to Cowboy Altitude to learn more about Sutton.

Walk-On Aaron Grubb

Image via Houston Chronicle
Learned of another new walk-on today in Aaron Grubb. Grubb is in fact the brother of current Roadrunner tight end and PAT holder Seth Grubb. Aaron assumed a do-it-all role at La Vernia, helping lead the team to a state quarterfinal match up with Columbia. Grubb saw time at running back, wide receiver, slot receiver, quarterback, safety, and returned punts last last year. That's just me counting off of his highlight reel too, so there's really no telling where all the kid contributed. Aaron is listed at 5'9", 165 lbs. on his Hudl profile with a 4.37 40 yard dash (woah), 10.76 second 100 yard dash (woah), and a 37" vertical (woah). 315 pounds on the bench press, 455 pounds on the squat rack, and 225 on the clean. Pretty solid numbers for a small guy. Grubb was first team all-district in all three years of his varsity career. Highlight video is available on the Hudl profile linked to above.

Promise we'll get back to talking about more realignment stuff soon. Also, some great news about the future of Coker Chronicles will be posted shortly, so be sure to be checking back.
